Our story doesn’t begin in 1999 with the founding of Healthy Pet Accessories by a lady named Sue. No, our story begins long before that, much like a fairy tale. It begins with Edna Duggan, a spirited young girl who grew up on a small holding in Benoni, Gauteng. It was here, amidst the rolling hills, that Edna first realized she was destined for something much greater in life—and she was going to make it happen, no matter what.
The Beginnings of a Dream
As a child, Edna had two main passions: creating businesses that often gave her parents a few grey hairs, and taking care of her pets with the utmost love and devotion. Edna’s home was always full of animals. She brought in whatever she could find to care for—praying mantis bugs, ducks, dogs, cats, goldfish… you name it. If it had breath, it had a place in Edna’s heart. And why did she do this? Because she truly wanted to improve the lives of animals in need. She gave them a peaceful life on the small holding, showering them with treats, affection, and the attention they deserved.
Edna followed her heart wherever it led her, which resulted in many successful ventures, some of which you might recognise—such as Virgin Mobile, Vodacare, and more. But despite her success in the corporate world, Edna found herself longing for something deeper, something missing from her childhood—a connection with animals, an interaction she had cherished so much as a child.
The Birth of Healthy Pet Accessories
It wasn’t until 2015 that Edna spotted a gap in the market—a company in need of a little TLC—and that company was Healthy Pet Accessories. They were searching for a leader, someone with the passion and vision to transform the pet industry. Edna seized the opportunity, bringing her big plans, creative thinking, and boundless enthusiasm into play.
The journey was no easy feat. It took hard work, determination, and an unrelenting commitment to the cause. But Edna was resolute—she knew this was her path. She had a vision, and she was prepared to make it a reality.
Throughout this journey, Edna also raised a beautiful family. Alongside her supportive husband, Eric, she raised her children, Lauren and Tyler, with the same love and respect for animals she had known as a child. With their own pets—Tank and Faith—Edna ensured her kids experienced the joy of caring for animals, and as they grew, they too became an integral part of the Healthy Pet Accessories story, helping their mum refine and improve the business every day.

Today, Healthy Pet Accessories is more than just a business—it’s a vibrant, eccentric, fun, and family-oriented brand. We pride ourselves on offering products that not only make you and your pet happy but also provide the best value for your money.
Our first groundbreaking product was Little BigPaw—imported from the UK, this dog and cat food was unlike anything else on the market. With no-nonsense and 70% meat, it marked a significant shift in the industry. It was a product designed not just for the peace of mind of pet owners, but with the pet’s nutrition and taste in mind. It was the first step in a long journey to give pets the very best in food and care.
